Bagu Sushi & Thai Reviews

The service was fantastic and the waitress was fun to talk to and very knowledgeable of the menu. The restaurant is quaint on the smaller side so it can fill up fast. Make reservations to be certain. The bathroom could use a good cleaning however. The food was very good from the sushi to the curry, and papaya salad to desert everything was wonderful. They can make it spicy as well which i love:). You can't go wrong with this gem.

Overdue review because I forgot to write one for Bagu from my previous visit to MN. Coming from California, I had low expectations for their Asian cuisine here since that's not what they're known for. From my experience, I can definitely say that Bagu exceeded my expectations for a Japanese & Thai fusion restaurant here in Minnesota. They have a private lot & street parking right in front of the restaurant, I believe. If I remembered correctly, we got here around 7 PM for dinner & were seated fairly quickly. The ambience was pretty upscale & modern; Definitely great for a date night! Our server was very warm & welcoming. I ordered my go-to tofu pad Thai while the rest of the party ordered pad see ew, sushi, beverages, & roti for dessert! For my dish, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality & taste of the pad Thai noodles. I came here not knowing what to expect in terms of flavor, but it was pretty good for what it was! I personally still prefer the pad Thai back at home, but this was as close as I'll get to the pad Thai back in CA, lol. Just a personal preference! I don't usually eat sushi often, so my opinion for it may be skewed, lol. I forgot what we ordered to be exact, but I thought it was good. My favorite dish of the night had to be the roti. It was AMAZING. Just writing this review is making me drool for the roti, haha. Definitely worth ordering! Can't wait to drop by again the next time I'm in MN!

Ordered the spicy salmon, three wise guys and the shinjuku rolls and all were fantastic!

We LOVE Bagu Sushi and Thai. We've only dined in once, and we sat in the back patio on a chilly evening, but it was perfect. The green tea helped warm me up. We had the JBB (highly recommend) which is essentially a salmon and cream cheese roll that is battered and deep fried. I always get the Mama roll and the salmon sashimi. My partner loves the Pad See Ew (which I agree is delicious) and the Masaman Curry. They are a small restaurant, so you typically will need a reservation. The staff are wonderful and down to earth. We've also ordered take out many times.

High quality food. It's a cool little spot, I will say that the seating is not A+ comfortable and it's not a quiet place when full. Everything we tried, and it was many things, was great. Service staff was great, although it did take us a little while to get our main dishes after the apps. Would go again.

Best ramen I've had so far here in MN! Definitely recommend. I got the spicy level 5! The service made my dining experience even better.

Last night was my first time checking out Bagu Sushi! Their location is in a nice a quiet area in south Minneapolis. They have. Small parking lot on the side of their building which I easily found a parking spot. The dining space inside is smaller but we easily got in with a reservation. I would say the dining furniture could use an update but it was clean. It would have been nice to have music low in the background, because it felt like everyone could hear my conversation. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. We started off with an appetizer and choose the Spring Rolls (shrimp, pork, lettuce, carrots and rice noodles). I enjoyed them and the sauce to dip them it was good! For dinner we shared sushi and got the following rolls: Spicy Tuna Sun Rise (seasonal) Alaska My favorite roll was the Alaska, it was spicy but wasn't too overpowering. I thought it had a nice kick. The sun rise roll was more of a sweeter roll with mango on top. It was good. I def will come back and check out their patio out back during the warmer summer months!

Discover the best sushi and Thai fusion in Minneapolis
What makes a restaurant stand out in a city full of culinary choices? It’s not just the food – it’s how the flavors, atmosphere, and service come together. At Bagu Sushi & Thai, you’ll immediately notice the balance between tradition and innovation. The menu is a blend of classic Japanese techniques and authentic Thai recipes, offering both comfort and surprise in every bite.
From spicy tuna rolls wrapped in delicate seaweed to steaming bowls of green curry rich with coconut and herbs, each dish is presented with care. For locals searching for a reliable go-to or visitors wanting a taste of something memorable in South Minneapolis, Bagu stands out not just for its menu variety but for the consistent quality across every plate.
A menu where authenticity meets creativity
One of the strongest impressions from our visits to Bagu Sushi & Thai is how thoughtfully the menu is curated. There’s no overload of dishes that try to please everyone. Instead, the selections show restraint and confidence. You’ll find signature sushi rolls like the Bagu Roll – a colorful combination of tempura shrimp, avocado, spicy mayo, and tuna on top – next to well-loved Thai staples like Pad Kee Mao, also known as drunken noodles.
Each item reflects an understanding of the ingredients at play. The fish tastes fresh, the herbs are aromatic, and the spice levels are just right. Dishes like the Tom Yum Soup, with lemongrass, lime, and mushrooms, are executed with precision, showing a deep respect for the roots of Thai cuisine.
Drinks are not an afterthought here, either. Bagu offers sake and Thai iced tea, perfect complements to either a sushi platter or stir-fry. It’s this thoughtful pairing and attention to harmony that brings a higher level of satisfaction to each meal.
More than food: atmosphere and service you’ll remember
While the dishes are reason enough to visit, the setting is what keeps people coming back. The restaurant strikes a balance between cozy and chic, with minimalistic décor that allows the food to take the spotlight. Warm lighting, clean tables, and friendly staff create a setting that’s both welcoming and efficient.
We’ve visited during both quiet lunch hours and busy weekend dinners, and in both cases, the service has been consistently attentive. Orders arrive promptly, and special requests – like extra wasabi or vegetarian substitutions – are met with a smile, not a sigh.
There’s also an unspoken understanding here between staff and regulars. Locals come in not just to eat, but to unwind. You’ll hear conversations across the tables about neighborhood events, business ideas, or weekend plans. That communal vibe adds a layer of familiarity that chains simply can’t replicate.
Location, community, and lasting impressions
Located on Chicago Avenue South, Bagu Sushi & Thai is in the heart of a vibrant Minneapolis neighborhood. The area is walkable, with local shops, parks, and residential blocks nearby. This makes Bagu a natural stop for a casual dinner out, a weekday lunch, or a small celebration with friends.
Online reviews reflect this loyalty. Customers often highlight not just specific dishes but their overall experience – how they were greeted, how their kids were treated, how the food made them feel. That’s the mark of a restaurant that understands its role in the community.
What stands out most is the sense of care – from the way ingredients are prepped to the gentle check-ins from the server mid-meal. It’s not a flashy restaurant, but it doesn’t need to be. It wins people over one dish at a time, and by the time you leave, you’ve already made a mental note of what to order next visit.
Menu favorites like Red Curry, Tiger Roll, or Garlic Stir-Fry Chicken are worth a try, but it’s the whole package – location, ambience, service, and flavor – that makes Bagu Sushi & Thai a name you remember long after the meal ends.
We came here on a Friday night without reservations and planned to come early around 530 and they were actually busy. The staff were so friendly and let us know that they had reservations and there would be time to come back around 7. So she recommended some bars nearby. We quickly were called back and got seated. It had a small dining room but service is quick. We got edamame, also style papaya salad (5 spice level, the highest), a sushi roll (I think dynamite, I forgot), and a red curry with chicken that came with rice. It was all really good and more than enough for 2 people. We had enough to take home. They had a wide selection. There's a parking lot next to the building and some street parking.
